How Can Ozone Treatment Turn Healthcare Waste Into Fuel?

When it comes to healthcare waste, many people are unaware of the dangers it poses. Not only is it a biohazard, but it can also contain harmful chemicals and pollutants. Traditional sanitizing and shredding processes create waste which is safe to deposit in landfills. Increasingly another option has emerged which is using sanitized and processed medical waste as an alternative fuel source.

Step One: Sanitizing Medical Waste

Before AMS Med Waste turns healthcare waste into fuel, it must be sanitized to reduce the risks associated with potentially infectious pathogens. Using a system that includes HEPA filters, shredding, low- and high-pressure steam and controlled exposure time medical waste is prepared for safe disposal. This is accomplished with no dangerous emission or odor.

Utilizing this process allows the treated waste to be deposited in landfills or increasingly more popular is diversion into other waste disposal streams. Most frequently some type of waste to energy fuel products. This fuel can then be used in concrete kilns or plastic extrusion production.

AMS works with our customers to not only handle their medical waste in a manner that complies with EPA regulations but all the way down to “end of life” for that waste in a manner that is consistent with their “green objectives”.

Step Two: Sterilized Waste Is Converted Into Fuel

Treated in this manner, healthcare waste becomes a resource for other energy sources and also a significant contributor to the dwindling and increasingly landfill space. By moving in this direction our customers and AMS in combination are helping to create a more efficient use of both resources and materials.

This fuel is known as ‘biodiesel’, and it is made by combining oxygen and organic matter. Biodiesel is a renewable resource that produces significantly fewer emissions than traditional fossil fuels. As a result, it is an important part of sustainable development.

The use of biodiesel also helps to reduce our dependence on imported oil, which is often sourced from unstable or hostile regions of the world. In addition, biodiesel can be used in existing infrastructure without the need for significant investment in new technology. This makes AMS Med Waste’s sterilization process an important tool in promoting sustainability. By converting waste into fuel, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help to protect the environment.
